Q:

Our facility has had a couple claims come back with incorrect ICD 10 codes (i.e. Depression F32.9, cough r05 and low back pain m54.5).  I notice that they have new digits added. Is there a resource to find new ICD-10 code changes?

A:

Each year, in October, ICD-10-CM code updates occur. The 2022 ICD-10-CM codes are to be used for discharges and patient encounters occurring from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022. You can find the changes made to ICD-10-CM codes for FY2022 in the ICD 10-CM Tabular Addenda document in the 2022 Addendum file posted in the Downloads section of the CMS 2022 ICD-10-CM web page. A few pertinent code changes that you will find include: F32.9 Major depressive disorder, single episode is no longer the default code for Depression NOS. A new code, F32.A Depression, unspecified, has been added to use for coding unspecified depression. A fifth digit is now required when coding M54.5 Low back pain to specify if the low back pain in unspecified (M54.50), vertebrogenic low back pain (M54.51), or other low back pain (M54.59). A fourth digit is now required when coding R05 Cough to specify if acute (R05.1), Subacute (R05.2), Chronic (RO5.3), Cough Syncope (RO5.4), other specified (RO5.8), or unspecified (RO5.9). A new code U09.9 Post COVID-19 condition, unspecified was added.
