Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, regulatory guidance, reimbursement waivers, and state requirements evolved quickly. Tracking these changes and implementing or updating facility processes to comply was a challenge on the best day. Add to the mix weeks of prolonged staffing shortages, PPE limitations, or virus outbreaks, it’s understandable that many providers have felt overwhelmed.  As nursing homes begin to look toward the possibility of taking steps to reopen in consideration of recently released CMS guidance, a growing number of facilities are starting to see a light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel.

Throughout the public health emergency (PHE), the rapid fire release of waivers and flexibilities allowed providers to move forward with top priorities for providing quality patient care; however, as the PHE response frenzy lessens, providers should consider creating an audit plan for examination of documentation to support loan/grant monies received, as well as coding, billing, and reimbursement of COVID-19 claims and/or claims that applied SNF Medicare waivers.
