Two Changes to KY Physical Therapy Practice Act
As of June 2, 2017, the Kentucky Board of Physical Therapy set forth changes according to 201 KAR 22:053, the administrative regulation which sets forth ethical standards and standards of practice for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.
While some of the changes were simple technical clarifications, the most significant change to note is that Section 5 (3) (a) now mandates that ongoing documentation regarding patient treatment must be completed at least weekly, or if treatment is less than weekly, at each patient visit. The purpose of this requirement is to ensure that the PT record contains timely and accurate information regarding the patient’s treatment and plan of care. If you are a facility in Kentucky and are currently completing PT (clinician) documentation every 10th visit, please note this change to the frequency of documentation and modify your procedure accordingly.
While the updated Kentucky regulation omits the requirement for a PT discharge summary, Proactive strongly recommends continued use of the discharge summary to meet federal payor documentation standards. The revised regulation maintains requirements that ongoing documentation include anticipated time frames of achievement and reassessments. This regulation only impacts Kentucky practitioners and does not alter any other state or federal requirements.
